Nederburg has won the 2013 International Wine & Spirit Competition trophy for best dessert wine, topping what the organisers called a “huge line-up of sweet gold medal winning wines from all over the world, including Hungary, Germany, Canada, Germany, Australia and Chile”.

The winning wine is the 2008 vintage of Eminence, the natural sweet wine reserved for sale on the annual Nederburg Auction. The same wine was also ranked one of the world’s top dessert wines at Muscats du Monde in 2011.

Nederburg also saw three of its wines honoured at the Six Nation Wine Challenge just held in Sydney, when the 2009 Eminence took double gold, the 2012 Noble Late Harvest, gold and the 2011 Ingenuity White, a medal of excellence. The event involved submissions from South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina and the US. All the best wines will be showcased in the participating countries.

This was after emerging as one of the top performers at Veritas over the weekend, winning four double gold, 10 golds and 15 silvers at the SA National Wine Show. Demonstrating a fair degree of consistency of results in three very different competitions, it was Nederburg’s sweet wines that dominated with three of the four Veritas double golds going to the 2011 Eminence and the 2011 and 2012 vintages of the Winemaker’s Reserve Noble Late Harvest, respectively. The fourth double gold was awarded to the 2009 Private Bin R163 Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Veritas golds went to the 2007, 2008 and 2009 vintages of the flagship noble late harvest Edelkeur; the 2008, 2009 and 2010 vintages of Eminence, as well as to one other wine produced for the Nederburg Auction, the 2009 Private Bin 181 Merlot.  The 2012 The Anchorman, a wooded Chenin blanc, also took gold, as did the 2013 Winemaster’s Reserve Special Late Harvest and the Nederburg Solera Potstilled Brandy.

The week before, Nederburg was featured in this year’s 2013 FNB Top 10 Sauvignon Blanc Competition, when the 2012 vintage of the Private Bin D234 was chosen as an example of one of the best expressions of the varietal. The single-vineyard wine, sourced from a block in the Groenekloof, in the Darling region, is intended for sale on the Nederburg Auction.

Most important to us, is that the winning wines come from across the spectrum of the range, representing our specialty and more widely available offerings. “
