Last week television host Khanyi Mbau revealed that she is launching her own brand of gin called I Am Khanyi – Millennial Shimmer Gin.

While her fans raved about the beautiful pink and gold packaging, some twitter users questioned the name.

“Khanyi Mbau’s gin would’ve worked if the name was just simply ‘Khanyi’,” one Twitter user wrote.

Another tweep wrote: “I am Khanyi” is the dumbest name I’ve ever heard. For gin? Khanyi Mbau’s people hate her and don’t want to see her succeed.”

Speaking to ZAlebs, Khanyi says that the gin was designed specially to suit her persona, style and personality.

She also explained the meaning behind the name.

“I chose to name it Khanyi because I am the light, a brand of the people… People have owned my story and career for years, so why not allow them to take me home and also allow me to be part of their special moments? but it’s no lie, I AM KHANYI MBAU.”

The 33-year-old says that she was “fully involved in the whole process; from the concept, design, through to which flavour profiles would work”.

Vodka seems to be the celebrity drink of choice, with AKA, Cassper Nyovest and Thando Thabethe representing two top brands.

So, why gin? Khanyi says that she chose gin because it is a beautiful beverage.

“My gin is one of a kind. It shimmers and glows in the dark, plus has so much attitude! Besides, who drinks a celebrity? Have me.

“The first sip is like taking a bite into a Turkish delight and it explodes with a fruity element of berries and grape, smooth and not strong on the taste buds. Don’t let the colour fool you, it’s a baddie!”

Khanyi’s gin will hit stores in December.
