Washington wine grapes to set record

Washington wine grape growers are finishing up what will be a record harvest for the third year in a row. Increased acreage and good weather contributed.

CASHMERE, Wash. — Wine grape growers in Washington are wrapping up another record harvest that is second in size only to California’s.

Washington’s crop was forecast at 230,000 tons in August and industry sources say it probably will top that. Tonnage has been on a steady climb from 142,000 in 2011 mainly due to growing acreage, now in excess of 45,000 acres.

“It’s been a spectacular year. No doubt it will be a record harvest. All the moving pieces that growers need to make it a quality year they had this year. Cool nights. Good weather. Limited rain,” said Vicky Scharlau, executive director of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers in Cashmere.

Harvest started the third week of August and will wrap up Nov. 10 with a few growers leaving a few grapes on vines perhaps into early December for ice wine, Scharlau said.
