Birthdays should be about cake, candles and presents, but for me it has always been a time for contemplation.

Among the many grape varieties it is often said that cabernet is king and chardonnay is queen.

I suppose all wine writers are asked the question: “You get to taste a lot of wines, so what’s your favourite wine of all?”

It’s not always the great names or the very expensive wines that win international awards.

I am sure many readers will have entertained soccer fans from overseas during this exciting World Cup season.

They say the “dop system” has been abolished from the Cape’s wine industry and that farm labourers are no longer paid partly in wine, but there is still one section of the industry that operates along the lines of the old system.

Winter has arrived in the Cape with a rush and a roar and most of us are cowering from the wild winds and almost horizontal rain.

It seems pink is becoming very fashionable in the wine world and I was delighted to meet two exciting and very different pink wines last week.

The first serious rain of the season reminded me winter was almost upon us and had me rummaging in my wine cupboard to check my stocks of fortified wines.

I’ve been exploring the Cape’s winelands for almost three weeks now, travelling from region to region on my little Vespa scooter
