Wine of the week: Boplaas Tinta Barocca 2014

tintaWine of Origin: Calitzdorp

Winemaker: Margaux Nel

Background: Big Daddy and owner of Boplaas, Carel Nel, handed over the responsibility of the winemaking to his daughter Margaux in 2006. Although he is still very involved with the farm’s activities, and especially when it comes to the final blending and bottling of their wines and ports, Margaux, now in her early 30’s, has taken on this enormous task with aplomb!  Boplaas is well known for its fine Ports but in recent years they added a range of several excellent table wines produced from their vineyards of Portuguese varieties.  One of these varieties, Tinta Barocca, was the first Portuguese variety grown at Boplaas, and besides being used in their Port production it has actually been made successfully as a table wine from this farm for many years. This week I attended a wine and food tasting with the Boplaas team which again confirmed my love for this variety. The 2014 vintage was harvested by hand and fermented in temperature controlled cement fermenters after which the wine was matured in French oak for 8 months prior to bottling.

Result: Bursting with dark fruit aromas of mulberry, plums and hints of aromatic spice,  leads you up to a rich mid palate of fruit balanced by soft tannins.

When to drink: now till 2018

Drink with what: We enjoyed the wine paired at lunch after the tasting with Grilled Tuna Bordelaise prepared by the team at Jonkershuis, Groot Constantia. However it’s happy with venison, casseroles and also brilliant with chicken peri peri!!!

Expect to pay: R73.00
