What’s a braai without a broodjie?

Lets face it, a braai is not a braai without a braai broodjie. It’s essential at any braai and these cheesy sandwiches really tickle my fancy. I’m clearly not the only fan of this traditional South African creation. There is a Facebook page dedicated to braai broodjies and in the “Blaas jou vuvuzela” song of Die Radio Kalahari Orkes, the Afrikaans rapper Jack Parow ask: “Se vir my baby, voor ek jou oopmond soen, kan jy braai broodjies maak?” For the English only people “Tell me baby before I French kiss you, can you make braai broodjies?”

I rediscovered my love for braai broodjies a few days ago at the ZEF party hosted by the Vinatics of Food 24. Man, those broodjies were lekker and I’m surprise no one tried to knock me out when I reached for the last one. Just to give you an idea, this is what they looked like:

Needless to say I stalked the chef for the recipe and luckily Caro was willing to share. The secret? The tomato chilli jam and the goats cheese. WOW, it’s that simple! These broodjies went well with everything. From the Drostdy-hof Sauvignon Blanc box wine to the Klippies & Cola. A True all rounder! Guess what I’ll be braaing this weekend…
