Wine of the week: Glen Carlou Chardonnay 2010

I’m not necessarily a big fan of New World, present day chardonnays. Many weigh in at either end of the range: too rich or too flabby. But this one from South Africa is refreshingly citrusy. Almost alarmingly piquant in the mouth at first, it settles down on mid palate, becoming a more well rounded and focused wine that is very versatile at the table.

Apple and citrus are the flavors that come into play first, followed by white peach with just a touch of butterscotch, toffee and vanilla. The tangy acidity persists, making it vibrant and mouthwatering, just the thing to clear the palate and invite the next bite, then the next sip. Repeat as often as pleasurable.
