Wine of the week: Glen Carlou Pinot Noir Rose 2018

Wine of Origin: Simonsberg-Paarl

Winery: Glen Carlou, Paarl

Winemaker: Johnnie Calitz

Background: “Curators of Classic Wines” is Glen Carlou’s motto and they have successfully achieved this by producing premium quality wines on this beautiful 145 hectare wine farm since 1985. Their elevated tasting room and restaurant boasts one of the finest views in the Simonsberg as well as having an interesting Fynbos Garden for those of you who are keen botanists to revel in! Glen Carlou is a member of the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative (BWI) which means it is committed to the preservation of the environment (they recently rehabilitated over two hectares of vulnerable endemic species on the property). The Pinot Noir Rose is a new addition to their range and has proven popular amongst rose lovers especially as there are not many Pinot Noir roses produced locally. Once harvested, the grapes were lightly pressed as whole bunches, and after fermentation the wine was left on the lees for a time to enrich the fruit flavours. The alcohol is a low 12.5% making it an ideal summer drink.

Result:  Bright pomegranate in colour, it has subtle aromas of warm earth and baked strawberry flan with the palate showing elegant flavours of red cherry and raspberries leading to a crisp dry finish.

When to drink: Now till 2021

Drink with what: Poached Salmon served cold with a tomato based hollandaise sauce.

Price (vat inclusive): R104.00
