Wine of the Week: Oldenburg Chenin Blanc 2012

There is great beauty in the Banghoek Valley north of Stellenbosch. The mountains alone are worth the trip. The drive up to the estate from the main Banghoek road in itself brings a feeling of great calm over you.

Once there, the vineyards, and Rondekop, the hill in the middle of the vineyards and one that affect the microclimate in the vineyards, are so beautiful and well tended.

The Oldenburg Chenin Blanc 2012 is a perfect example of white Oldenburg’s white wines are all about. Handpicked, barrel fermented for 9 months in 300litre French Oak barrels of which half were new, and deliciously dry. Simon Thompson, winemaker and viticulturist since 2004, makes some pretty serious red wines too.
