Wine review: Boland Cellar Reserve Natural Ferment

When your wine grape growers have been part of your business for about 60 years, your viticulturists are able identify vineyard block which year after year produce fine grapes.

This is an opportunity for Boland Cellar to produce a single vineyard wine like the Boland Cellar Reserve Natural Ferment [No 1] Shiraz 2013.

This southern French wine grape is so suited to the similar climate of Paarl. The vineyard from which the grapes used for this wine came is one of two blocks on the first slopes of the Paardeberg to the west of Paarl. The are planted in deep shale based soils – also known as Schist or Scali. Each year the vineyard, which performs best, is chosen for this wine. The vines are trellised and irrigation is only supplied when required. Mid summer harvesting is done to remove bunches to allow those left on the vine to ripen evenly with rich aromas, flavours and colour.
