Wine review: Winters Drift 51 Miles Unwooded Chardonnay 2014

Winters Drift Wine Estate sits in the middle of the Elgin Valley where the lovely cool climate plays such an important part in their vineyards and winemaking.

On the Elgin Station platform in the old station buildings Winters Drift’s Platform 1 Eatery offers excellent food in great surroundings and served, of course, with their own sublime wines.

On the station sign, one side gives the altitude above sea level, while the other give “51 Miles to Cape Town.” Now, cleverly, they have brought out a range of wines which are on sale at the tasting room on the station platform.

The grapes for the Winters Drift 51 Miles Unwooded Chardonnay 2014 were harvested in the cool of night from their south facing vineyards. Taken to the cellar, they were pressed in a traditional basket press. The free run juices alone were used, yeasts added and the wine cool fermented. After fermentation, the wine rested on the fine lees for 10 months, with stirring taking place once a month. This process enhances complexity in the wine.
