Winters Drift releases new wine range called 51 Miles

Winters Drift in Elgin is excited to announce the launch of its new wine range called 51 Miles.

Following the popularity of their other award winning wines, the name of these newly released wines represent the distance between the Winters Drift’s Tasting Station and the city of Cape Town.

The 51 Miles range consist out of a Unwooded Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc and are available only at the Winters Drift Tasting Station in Elgin or it can be purchased through the winery’s online shop.

Vinivication
Grapes were harvested at night, pressed in a basket press and only the free run juice was used. Yeast inoculation took place at low temperatures. The first sulphur dosage took place late to ensure a creamy and full mouth feeling. The wine stayed on the fine lees for 10 months with monthly stirrings to enhance the complexity.

Viticulture
The Chardonnay vineyards have a (cooler) south facing aspect, and are 295m above sea level. Planted with a vine spacing of 2.5m x 1.5m in deep red/yellow soils with high water retention capacity, but very well drained.

What to expect

Aromas of candied citrus fruits, pears, limes and sweet floral notes at the end. Powerful lime characters enchanting the roundness of the cantaloupes along with the peaches, lingering into a long satisfying finish.

Vinivication
Grapes were harvested at night, pressed in a basket press and the decision was made to not have any skin contact between the skin and juice of the pressed berries, too ensure we don’t lose any of the natural acidity in the berries. Different yeast strains were used and inoculation took place at lower temperatures to ensure more complexity. The wine stayed on the fine lees for 8 months and was stirred monthly to create more mouth feeling.

Viticulture
The Sauvignon Blanc vineyards have a (cooler) south facing aspect, and are 340m above sea level. Planted with a vine spacing of 2.5m x 1.5m in deep yellow soils with a high water retention capacity, but very well drained.

What to expect

Aromas of melons, honey, nectarines and a hint of gooseberries, finishing off with the flavours of fresh, green apples. White peaches and melons, supported by a refreshing balance between natural acidity and minerality.
