Zonnebloem Cabs Fetch Amongst Top Prices At Records Nederborg Auction

There could be no doubting Zonnebloem’s classic appeal, as the South African favourite attracted some of the highest prices at the 2014 Nederburg Auction.

A six-bottle case of 1964 Cabernet Sauvignon went for R30 000, the equivalent of R5 000 a 750ml bottle. Two other six-bottle cases of the wine fetched R22 000 each, one from the 1974 vintage and the other from the 1984.

All three cases were bought by Juric Imports & Exports.

Meanwhile, a six-bottle case of Zonnebloem’s 1975 Cabernet Sauvignon went under the hammer for R20 000, purchased by the Grand Beach Café in Cape Town.

Global marketing manager Dè-Mari Kellerman said that the prices achieved, which were significantly higher than the already record prices attained across the board this year, were indicative of Zonnebloem’s collector status.

“The longevity and reputation of these vintage wines inspire our present cellar team to craft contemporary classics that will endure with the same success.”

She said that Zonnebloem was currently one of South Africa’s top-selling premium brands, outselling most of its competitors.
