Re-imagining Kaapstad without academics

What a brilliant exhibition opening this evening at ArtsCape. My first function for World Design Capital 2014: Re-imagining Kaapstad with asparagus wrapped in cucumber, Nederburg Wines, Enyaesque music and retro art. It could have been 1964! Here is WDC Queen Alayne Reesburg with Luan Nel in front of his artwork.

Best work on show for me was Henk Serfontein channelling the late Braam Kruger. I scored it 5 stars, sighted.

Another five star stunna was a whimsical Lien Botha

On another level entirely, here’s Selwyn Pekeur – apologies to Jack “kak” Vettriano – it looks like William Kentridge dancing with Saartjie Baartman. I love the shoes.

The exhibition was opened by a passing Rector from Stellenbosch University who quoted Jakes Gerwel to establish a serious tone. Am I the only one thinking SA academics have gone down the tubes since JM Coetzee upsticksed to Down Under?

It’s a different story in the UK where Cambridge alone spends R55 million buying wine a year. That’s R30 million more than Johann Rupert gives Stellenbosch. Imagine what UCT Business School could do with that kind of support instead of appointing dodgy visiting professors without qualifications.

Stop Press. The widow of Jakes bought Luan’s re-imagining of Cape Town, shown at the top of the post. Did Jakes read the blog in heaven?
