Scientists unveil a sour brew that is good for your gut and can stop you from getting ill

Good news for beer lovers. You may soon be able to buy a pint that can stop you from getting ill.

Scientists have invented a new type of beer that has many of the same health benefits of a probiotic yogurt drink.

The new kind of brew, known as ‘sour beer’, is packed with billions of probiotics, substances that stimulate the growth of good bacteria in your gut.

The beer incorporates a probiotic strain from the bacteria Lactobacillus paracasei L26.

The probiotic was first isolated from human intestines and has the ability to neutralise toxins and viruses, as well as regulate the immune system.

Fourth-year student Chan Mei Zhi Alcine, from the National University of Singapore, decided to create a probiotic beer for people with lactose intolerance who cannot have probiotic yogurts.

‘The health benefits of probiotics are well known,’ said the Food Sciences student.

‘While good bacteria are often present in food that have been fermented, there are currently no beers in the market that contain probiotics.
