Science says you’re holding your mug all wrong

Scientists from South Korea have spent a lot of time and energy on fixing one of life’s great problems: hot beverages spilling out of mugs and cups as you walk from the kettle back to your desk.

Or from the coffee shop back to your office, if you’re one of those macchiato with a caramel drizzle types.

After lots of lab experiments, test walks, and some intense analysis, the researchers declared that there’s a reason our tea and coffee keeps spilling while we walk. It’s all down to how we’re holding our cups.

The way we’re holding our cups is ALL WRONG.

The researchers say that by holding our mugs and cups from the side, via the handle or with our hand around the body of the cup, we increase the force at which the hot beverage hits the inside of the container.

That causes the hot beverage to rise more forcefully and spill out of the mug. The horror. Oh, the horror.

The solution? THE CLAW GRIP. Behold.
