Cocktails To Pair With The Best Picture Nominees At The 91st Academy Awards

Time to get your glamour on and fill out the ballots. Just because you’re not attending Sunday’s 91st annual Academy Awards, doesn’t mean you can’t get in the spirit with some clever, cinema-inspired cocktails. We enlisted the help of Manny Hinojosa, the Brentwood-based global brand ambassador for Bacardi’s Tequila Cazadores, to create cocktails inspired by this year’s Best Picture nominees.

Whether you prefer an absinthe-laced Somebody To Love to accompany your “Bohemian Rhapsody” cheers, or an elegant, vodka-based Miss Gaga to sip when they announce “A Star is Born,” here are eight sips that pay homage to the year’s best films. Recipes are for one cocktail.

Green Book: The Bouncer

To create the whisky-based cocktail, The Bouncer, Hinojosa used ingredients common in the Deep South, where the characters Dr. Don Shirley (Viggo Mortensen) and Tony Lip (Mahershala Ali) travel while confronting racism in the era of segregation.

Ingredients:

1 small sprig mint

½ lemon, sliced

1½ ounces Angel’s Envy Bourbon Whisky

½ ounce Disaronno

2 ounces black tea

Directions: In a mixing glass, muddle the mint and lemon slices. Add the rest of the ingredients with crushed ice. Shake, strain and serve in a double old-fashioned glass.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Somebody to Love

Hinojosa’s “Somebody to Love” is a personal favourite, a tequila-based sipper dedicated to the Queen biopic. “Back in 1984, Queen performed for the first time in Mexico City,” Hinojosa says. “It was my first-ever concert, and I’ll never forget it. I love the band, and this cocktail is a harmony of flavours.”

Ingredients:

1¼ ounces Corzo Silver Tequila

¼ ounce absinthe

½ ounce honey syrup

¾ ounce fresh lemon juice

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Champagne

Directions: In a cocktail shaker, combine all the ingredients with ice — except the Champagne. Shake and serve up in a flute. Top with chilled Champagne. Garnish with lime, lemon twist and raspberry.
