The Lanzerac Cabernet Sauvignon 2012 will be the envy of your friends when serving this superb wine at your next dinner party. Assuring you of its outstanding quality and ageing potential winemaker Wynand Lategan has sourced only the finest grapes from the Stellenbosch Jonkershoek Valley for the latest release from Lanzerac Wine Estate.
Two different vineyard blocks in the Jonkershoek Valley were used for the Lanzerac Cabernet 2012. The blocks were 19 years old in 2012 and consist of 7.44 hectares in total. The yield for the 2012 vintage was 3.75 tons/ha. Both blocks are situated at an altitude of 160-336m above sea level with mainly deep red decomposed granite soils. All pruning and harvesting is done by hand to ensure that only healthy and fully ripe grapes reach the cellar.
Upon arrival at the cellar the grape bunches are hand sorted before being destemmed; the loose berries undergo a further hand sorting before it is lightly crushed. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks with regular pump-overs to extract colour and flavour. After fermentation was completed the wine was left on the skins for two to three weeks before it was drained off and the skins pressed. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation in barrels.
A selection of new, 2nd fill and 3rd fill French oak barrels were used to mature the Cabernet Sauvignon for at least 18 months. Regular rackings resulted in excellent integration between wood, fruit and tannins.
Wynand describes the wine as displaying inviting flavours of violet, leather, blackberry and youngberry with hints of cocoa, almond and cedar. A beautiful full-bodied wine with excellent balance on the palate and a lingering aftertaste. Enjoy now, but will reach its full potential if left to age for another five to eight years.
