Lanzerac’s Mrs English Shines at Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show

In what can only be described as one of the most prestigious industry competitions, the Lanzerac Mrs English Chardonnay 2011 wowed the judges at the 2016 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, walking away with a well-deserved Gold medal in the Museum Class category.

The awards were announced on 31 May at the Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.

This prestigious medal is awarded to wines older than four years of age, in addition to a score between 90 and 100 out of a maximum total of 100. The Mrs English Chardonnay scored an impressive 93 points. A total of 1 067 wines were entered into this year’s competition of which only 35 Gold medals were awarded. The judging panel was chaired by the highly esteemed Michael Frijdhon who was joined on by international judges Michael Bettane (France), Eric Goettelmann (France) and Simon Tam (Hong Kong). The local judging panel included Trizanne Barnard, Cape Wine Master Heidi Duminy, Christian Eedes, Nkulu Mkhwanazi, JD Pretorius and Francois Rautenbach.

Keeping it ‘Proudly Stellenbosch’ the grapes used to produce this award-winning wine were sourced from the Jonkershoek area. According to Cellarmaster, Wynand Lategan the 2011 vintage is a complex wine with citrus flavours on the nose, a full palate and lingering aftertaste. Together with his team great care was taken during the blending process to create a wine with faultless balance, character, poise and deliverance.

“We are thrilled by this latest award, which reaffirms that the Jonkershoek area keeps producing grapes and inevitably wines of such a premium quality,” says Wynand.
