Winery of the Week: Kleinhoekkloof Wine Estate

Only 90 minutes drive from Cape Town on the popular Route 62, lies the Robertson Wine Valley. Nestled between the Langeberg and Riviersonderend Mountain ranges, this wine route offers a landscape of flower fringed roads, majestic mountains, a river running through the valley and above all, world class wines. This is where you will discover Kleinhoekkkloof Wines.
Kleinhoekkloof
Kleinhoekkloof is an award-winning family owned boutique wine and olive farm situated in close proximity to the little town of Ashton and safely ensconced within the Langeberg Mountain range. Handcrafted wines are created here – wines that also reflect the superb quality of the fruit sourced from tiny wisps of vineyard. The farm has a rich heritage – spanning a century and more, and was acquired by the De Jongh family in 2004.  Work then immediately began on restoring the original buildings to also include a new working cellar.
Owner and self-taught winemaker Theunis De Jongh makes the wine in the small hands-on cellar with as little interference as possible and using gravity to minimise the use of pumps.  The emphasis is to make wines that embody the unique terroir of Kleinhoekkloof.
With a mere 11.8 hectares under vine, production is limited to selected varietals, namely:
Kleinhoekkloof
Sauvignon Blanc, Nouvelle, Viognier, Shiraz, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Pinot Noir. The wines are distributed to a private network of wine connoisseurs and selected restaurants. Danielle, the family’s marketing guru, ensures that wine-lovers are able to acquire their personal pick of each vintage.
Wine-tastings are offered in the newly-built tasting room adjacent to the cellar. You can combine a wine, olive and olive oil tasting – accompanied perhaps by artisan charcuterie products which excite the taste buds, and are handmade from top quality meats and ingredients. All these mouth- watering extras are produced on the farm, and available to purchase. Friendships are invariably created over good food and wine – – that’s the philosophy at Kleinhoekkloof!
Kleinhoekkloof eagerly embraces the belief that farming in harmony with nature ensures that significant strides are made in protecting our precious natural heritage. To this end 80 % of the farm is registered for BWI (Biodiversity and Wine Initiative) scheme, and by also participating in the Leopard Friendly farming initiative.
Tastings, sales and luncheons are available all year round, by appointment only.
Call to book your personal wine-exploration, and enquire about the charcuterie, olive and olive oil tastings. It’s the ideal excuse for interrupting a journey, stretching your legs and tickling your taste buds!
