Winery of the Week: Baleia Bay

The farm Dassieklip is home to the Baleia Bay vineyards – and was specifically selected for the vineyards because of its limestone rich soil and close proximity to the ocean.
After our first harvest in 2011, we needed a name for our wines – and we suitably  came up with Baleia Bay. It was inspired by the Portuguese word for whale (Baleia) and it is directly related to our farm being a stone’s throw away from St Sebastian  Bay which is known as the whale nursery of South Africa due to the record number  of Southern Right whales that migrate here annually.

SAUVIGNON BLANC 2012
Find a combination of tropical and gooseberry fruits on the nose of this Sauvignon Blanc, which is sculpted by exceptional terroir. The palate has a firm acidity, beautifully rounded by the high extract that lingers with an aftertaste of passion fruit.
CHARDONNAY 2011
The extraordinary piece of earth close to Africa’s tip, on which our Chardonnay vines grow, contributes to this unique wine. Mouth-watering citrus fruits, hints of oak and a richness that fill the palate. A wine that will age with strength and elegance.
PINOT NOIR 2011
Soils rich in limestone and growth conditions close to the sea all conspire to give this wine a unique character. From delicate fresh hay to voluptuous strawberry on the nose. The palate combines softness and rich tannins that will ensure the wine will age well for ten years and longer. Simply a profusion of classic beauty.

SHIRAZ 2011
This wine’s unique character is created from limestone rich soils and cool maritime conditions true to the Cape of Storms. These limestone soils ensure soft elegant tannins with a deep rich colour and texture. The nose is delicately balanced with spicy black pepper.
