South Africa against the world — our grandest tasting yet

We are proud to announce our grandest tasting ever! In association with the Nederburg Auction, Wine Cellar will pit South Africa’s legends of yesteryear against the greatest fine wines from around the globe. Spurred on by recent local and international praise of vintage South African wines, we wish to prove just how good these wines really are.

The line-up:

Welcome: JC Le Roux Pinot Noir MCC Magnum 1989
Flight 1: De Wetshof Chardonnay 1993 vs. Joseph Drouhin Montrachet 1995, Burgundy
Flight 2: Zonnebloem Pinotage 1974 vs. Chateau Montelena Zinfandel 1975, Napa Valley
Flight 3: Chateau Libertas 1959 vs. Chateau Musar 1959, Lebanon
Flight 4: GS Cabernet 1966 vs. Chateau Latour Pauillac 1966, Bordeaux
Flight 5: KWV Limited Release Port 1948 vs. Taylor’s Port 1948, Douro, Portugal

Jancis Robinson awarded the George Spies Cabernet 1966 a perfect score of 20/20 when tasting it earlier this year. Steven Spurrier also enthused about the 1965 Zonnebloem Cabernet Sauvignon, judging it to be on a par with or better than fine Bordeaux of the same age. All of the rare South African wines that will be featured at the tasting, are, or have been, under the hammer at Nederburg – the country’s oldest fine wine auction. They will be compared to international benchmarks from Portugal, Lebanon, the United States and France. With the international wines costing up to R30,000 per bottle, the once-unheralded South African wines are really up against it!

Earlier in July we also look forward to a great tasting with Nederburg’s long-standing cellar-master, Razvan Macici, who will demonstrate the amazing depth of sweet wines at the 2015 Nederburg Auction. He will guide you through some of his finest vintages compared to international benchmarks. Eminence 2007 will be tasted against Vin de Constance 2007, Edelkeur 2005 with Domaine Huet Moëlleux 2003 and 1982 Edelkeur against Moulin Touchais 1982! The crescendo will no doubt be Nederburg’s Noble Late harvest 2007 paired with the great 2005 vintage of Château d’Yquem.
