Debra’s Weekender: Durban

DurbanTourism_005

Hold onto your slops Durban, the weekend is here and you will need to prepare yourself for all the amazing events the city has lined up for you. Don’t let me ever hear you say that nothing happens in the hottest of the 7 Coolest New Wonder cities in the known universe. Or is it the Coolest of the 7 Hottest New wonder cities? I forget and I digress, let’s get to the good stuff, shall we?

27 June 2015 – Poet’s Porch

In its fourth consecutive year, Poet’s Porch is a “day out in the sticks” type music festival which features amateur and professional acts and is an event that, like White Mountain Music Festival, attracts the whole family. Previous Poet’s Porch alumni include Just Jinger, Gangs of Ballet, The Catlike Thieves and Ferrets.

Hopefully we will see the return of much loved Midlands hero Angus Burns this year who has recently succumbed to a bout of the ‘flu. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing Angus perform at Pecanwood Festival last year October. He really knows how to get a crowd rocking and keeping the audience’s attention after Jeremy Loops is no mean feat. Let’s hope he gets better by Saturday.

If he doesn’t make, fear not because SA iTunes chart topping folk rocker Matthew Mole will be bringing his unique sound to what should be a fun filled day of music for everyone. Remember to pack your winter woollies as temperatures drop low and fast after the sun sets.

DETAILS:

Venue: Baynesfield Club – Directions

Dates: 27 June 2015.

Tickets online: R80

26 – 28 June 2015 – Fun in the Sun

Now a household name in Durban, Fun in the Sun is back at Hazelmere dam. It’s always a blast and revellers are consistently treated to a stellar line up of musical acts.

Besides, where else in this country can you enjoy a beach bar (reimagined this year as The Blossom Bar), at a dam, in the middle of winter? Precisely!

So grab your tent, pack your baggies and flip-flops—for the day time—and take a few warm things for the evenings.

There will be three bars, yummy food supplied by RepubliK (amongst others), a cracking line-up of musical guests including the hotter than hot Veranda Panda, The Kiffness, Dean Fuel, HoliDave, Vido, Amigo, Protoculture, Ryan Stylz, Brett Aiken, Jakskandi, Viktoria and Chris Taylor.

Apparel will be sold at the venue if you forget anything.

June 2015 – Women in Resistance

Alliance Français de Durban is following on from last week’s Poetry of Bodies with Women in Resistance by French photographer, Pierre-Yves Ginet.

The exhibition aims to recognise not just the struggle and contribution by women to democracy, justice and equality but also the sacrifice involved. This is a stark reminder that societies are mixed and that history is equally as feminine as it is masculine.

With gender equality still more of a myth than a reality, this is an important topic and Alliance Français are to be applauded in their continued efforts to showcase the importance of women in society through the medium of art.

DETAILS:

Venue: Durban Botanic Gardens, 9A John Zikhale (Sydenham) Road, Greyville.

Times: The exhibition opens at10h00 on Saturday and runs until Friday 10 July 2015
