Kicking off the Cape Wine Show

Cape Wine Show Launch Party

In celebration and anticipation of the tri-annual Cape Wine show held at CTICC, members of the Stellenbosch Wine Route gathered at Longridge Wine Estate on Sunday, 13 September, to showcase their winning wines beautifully paired with tiny foods.

The clear, warm day made for a perfect sunset over Table Mountain as guests gathered on the lawn sipping the wares of some of their favourite farms and nibbling away at bite-sized bits of deliciousness.

We started with the host’s, Longridge, delightful Chenin Blanc 2013 paired with exotic mushroom and parmesan bruschetta; followed by a range of delights such as Stellenbosch Vineyards’ new vintage of Sauvignon Blanc along with some gorgeous lemony squid;  Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Chenin Blanc 2014 with olive and anchovy tartlets; Lourensford MCC with fishcakes; Simonsig Pinotage with springbok tartare; Kleine Zalze Shiraz with venison pie and many more amazing wines with equally amazing pairings. Definite highlights on the pairing front were Lanzerac, Waterkloof and Waterford in collaboration with the Oude Werf Hotel. While complete opposite ends of the scale in terms of style, Lanzerac’s pairings were creative and innovative while Oude Werf was more traditional, with Waterkloof falling roundabout in the middle. All 3 were surprising and exceptional. From simple delights like smoked salmon trout fish cakes and corn with Waterford Chardonnay to pork belly croquettes rolled in crushed crackling with potato puree and Waterkloof Circle of Life, to duck terrine with pickled pear and crispy bacon and aubergine puree with a beetroot macaroon and kabeljou paired with Lanzerac Chardonnay 2014 and Pinotage 2013 respectively.

A feast for the palate (and the tummy) on all fronts, the event was the perfect way to set the tone for a big week in the wine world.
