Wine on the River Festival 2015

Wine on the River THIS Weekend!

Wine on the River is my absolute favourite wine festival! Having been two years in a row, I’ve been counting down the days until the Robertson Wine Valley once again unfurls its fabulous wine offerings upon the banks of the Breede river. This weekend, Friday 16th October, until Sunday 18th October, is your chance to experience the very best of Robertson and its surrounding towns.

Ticket prices range from R90 to R165 depending on which day you’d like to go, and includes a wine glass, as well as all tastings. A full weekend pass is available for R250, so why not make a weekend getaway of it?! Pensioners are offered discounts, and tickets are available at Webtickets.

Free shuttle service

As part of Wine on the River’s commitment to responsible drinking, shuttles will be servicing the wine valley’s towns, (Robertson, Montagu, and Bonnievale) so you can catch a ride to and from the festival area – bonus! This is a free service to all festival goers, but it will only be available on Saturday. See the event program for the shuttle schedule.

Robertson wine valley comes to you!

Now that the formalities are out of the way, let me paint the picture for you. It’s a balmy day – because it almost always is there – and you walk through the festival gates at Goudmyn Farm, onto the banks of the Breede River, wine glass in-hand. You’re greeted by lush green lawn, and large white marquee tents filled with stalls from over 30 wine farms. Yup, they’re all situated in one single location for your tasting convenience – heaven!

Free tutored tastings

Free tutored tastings will be on offer, giving you a chance to connect with the individual wine farms, and really understand what goes into making their wines. Seats are limited, with some already fully booked. Check out the tasting program and book your place before it’s too late!

A few wine farms you can expect to see at the festival include Arabella, Bon Courage, Bonnievale, Excelsior, Goedverwacht, Van Loveren, Zandvliet, and so so much more!

Food

Expect local fare such as Bobotie and roosterkoek, dude food indulgences such as hotdogs, fries, and steak sandwiches, and even sophisticated offerings such as sushi and oysters. I had the sushi last year and, it went down pretty spectacularly with a glass or two of Sauvignon Blanc, whilst seated on the grass, staring out towards people getting merry on a boat trip.

Boat trips

Speaking of which, an open air boat leaves the banks of the river every 15 minutes, and is a must with a bottle of sparkling wine and a group of friends. The trip will cost you R30 per person, with proceeds going towards the local hospice. Book your place at the jetty ahead of time or you might miss out!

Duck race

On Sunday, Sanlam will be hosting a duck derby to raise funds for the Bonnie-People Project. Buy your racing rubber ducky for R100, or convince your company to get one for R1000. The first few duckies across the finish line win big! All entrants stand to win lucky draw prizes too.

Live music

What would a festival be without live music? The soundtrack to your day will be the sounds of local musos doing their thing. Hopefully I’ll see you all on the dance floor?

In the meantime, check out the event’s program, which includes the full list of participating wine farms, as well as all the information you need to get amped for the weekend!
