Tequila`s popularity in U.S. sign of growing global demand

EL PASO, Texas – A British company now owns one of Mexico’s bestselling tequilas, another sign of the growing global demand for the drink.

Diagio acquired has full ownership of Don Julio after trading Bushmill’s Irish Whisky for the Mexican tequila.

Tequila sales have doubled in the United States in last decade, especially premium brands.

“It’s probably our best seller,” said Virginia Pruitt, a bartender at Malolam, an upscale cantina in the border city El Paso.

“All of our house drinks have tequila. Everybody likes tequila,” said Pruitt.

“I just came in and said what the best tequila you have in the house is and this happened to be it,” said Claudia Spencer, a customer.

Spencer chose Clase Azul, which costs $26 for about an ounce and a half of tequila.

The tequila comes in a large bottle that looks like pottery crafted by artisans in Mexico. The top is a silver bell that the bartender rings after pouring servings.
