The hunt is on for South Africa`s best Steak House

The search is on for South Africa’s best Steak House! Now in its second exciting year, The Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships selects South Africa’s favourite steakhouses by public vote – and then identifies the best of the best by expert judging.

A couple of weeks ago we visited last year’s winner, the Local Grill, which recently opened a new branch in Woodstock, Cape Town. We were mighty impressed with the quality of meats and variety of cuts, to such an extend that we decided to pay another famous steak house a visit and compare the quality.

Cattle Baron opened the doors to its first branch in Tokai, Cape Town, 20 years ago. The second branch opened 2 years later in Table View and it was not long before more branches popped up across the country.

Even though the brand has been well known for so many years, I never bothered to visit any of the Cattle Baron restaurants, until recently. After hearing only raving reviews, we decide to drive from town to Table View and see what all the fuss was about.

The first thing that took me by surprise was the wine list at Cattle Baron in Table View. Most of the franchise steak houses I’ve been to in the past had dire wine lists but not this one. The wine were well priced and and the list featured some of South Africa’s top wine estates, including some rare Nederburg Auction wines.

We decided to skip the starters and went straight to the mains. Just as well, because the amount of meat that we received were more than enough, even for those who are starving. The Chateaubriand was one of the finest fillets I’ve tasted in a while. Prepared to perfection and flame grilled at the table, a real fest on a plate!

When comparing standard and quality, Cattle Baron is right up there with the big guns in the running for this year’s The Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships. After a memorable dining experience, which did not break the bank, I’m happy to cast my vote in their favour.

Is your favourite steak house in the running for the 2014 The Wolftrap Steakhouse Championships? Public voting closes on Friday, 30 May 2014, so be sure to vote for your favourite.

Judging of the top five will take place early June with the establishments being visited by a select group of South Africa’s food experts and chefs including Pete Goffe-Wood, Reuben Riffel and Arnold Tanzer.
