Popular television presenter and online wine personality, Dan Nicholl, is releasing a series of captivating videos to share the unique stories of some of South Africa’s most talented sommeliers. The 10-part video series has been developed in collaboration with one of the country’s best-known names in wine, Nederburg.

Combining personal journeys, industry insight, and memorable wine moments, each episode sees Nicholl travelling to a South African restaurant or hotel, where the resident sommelier is introduced and his or her story told, culminating in the sommelier sharing a single bottle of local wine, and pairing it with a delicious dish. Meanwhile, the opening sequence of the episodes showcases a different part of the Nederburg farm each time, allowing viewers to briefly explore the home of this much-loved wine brand.

Says Nicholl: “I’d wanted to celebrate South Africa’s top sommeliers, who’re an essential part of the industry, and who offer such an important dimension to the dining experience. Nederburg shares my admiration for the sommeliers, and the work that they do in celebrating and promoting wine, and so the idea of the series became a reality.

“From award-winning La Colombe sommelier Joseph Dhafana, who a decade ago was a Zimbabwean refugee living on the streets of Johannesburg, to Luvo Ntezo, One&Only’s celebrated sommelier who was brought up by a single father in a Cape Town township, the video series highlights some remarkable people and their stories.”

Nicholl explains that The Sommelier Series with Nederburg has been one of his most memorable filming experiences. “Meeting people who are so passionate about wine, and who put so much time and effort into what they do, was incredible. I drank some fabulous wine during the production, with food to match – but more importantly I met people who made me laugh, who came close to making me cry, and who reaffirmed just what an asset we have in South Africa in our sommelier community.”
