Wine of the week – Hermanuspietersfontein Nr 7 Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Wine of Origin: Sondagskloof

Winery Location: Hermanus

Winemaker: Bartho Eksteen

Background: As you approach the popular seaside town of Hermanus you will find a delightful winery called Hermanuspietersfontein. The name perhaps maybe a tongue twister but is in fact the original name for Hermanus.

In 1815 Hermanus Pieters, a popular Dutch Farm School teacher, taught the children from the Hemel en Aarde valley. He set up camp near a spring (fontein) amongst the milkwood trees and so the area was known as ‘Hermanus Pieters se Fontein”.

Wine maker of the Nr.7 2013 and the “King of Sauvignon” himself, Bartho Eksteen, has made no less than five Sauvignon Blancs under the Hermanuspietersfontein label. The nr.7 was fermented in stainless steel tanks and left on the lees for 6 months, after which a small amount of wooded Semillon was added prior to bottling.
