Durbanville offers the perfect climate for Sauvignon Blanc

Durbanville is a ward of the larger Tygerberg wine district which lies on the northern outskirts of Cape Town in the Western Cape province.
A mere nine miles (15km) from the chilly Atlantic coast, this area is a perfect example of South Africa’s cool-climate viticulture.

Vineyards on elevated sections of the Tygerberg Hills are exposed to mist, localized dews and cool south-easterly breezes from False Bay during the growing season. The soil, mainly composed of well-drained shale, is also a feature of the local terroir. Overall, the area is highly suitable for growing grapes, which thrive here.

Durbanville has earned international recognition for the quality of its Sauvignon Blanc. These wines demonstrate intense classic aromas of gooseberry, herbaceous asparagus and hints of passionfruit – a signature of South African Sauvignon Blanc. Chardonnay and Semillon are the other important white varieties here. Warmer microclimates within the area are used to produce red wines based on Merlot and Shiraz.
