4 Golds for De Krans at Gold Wine Awards

De Krans Wines was recently awarded four Gold medals at the 2019 Gold Wine Awards. The medals were awarded to their De Krans Free-Run Chenin Blanc 2019, De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2019, De Krans A Twist of Fate 2017 and Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2018.

The De Krans Free-Run Chenin Blanc forms part of De Krans’ Classic range, and is perfect for everyday enjoyment. An abundance of soft fresh tropical fruits well-rounded smooth structure and lingering aftertaste, best describes the Free-Run Chenin Blanc. The De Krans Pinotage Rosé is packed with red fruit flavour and a balanced acidity, resulting in a burst of freshness.  On the nose you’ll pick up soft elegant rose petals, candy floss and hints of strawberries.

A light-bodied fruitier, flavoursome summer red wine, the De Krans A Twist of Fate boasts a beautiful cherry colour with red berry flavours and a spicy character. On the nose, the wine has a lovely earthiness and leather character with the12 months in oak elegantly translates into subtle oak and smooth tannins. This is the perfect summer wine for red wine drinkers and should be served chilled.

The Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc, which also forms part of the De Krans ‘family’, showcases the typical freshness of green pepper and cut grass on both the nose and palate. The wine displays a strong character of tropical fruit such as guava and passion fruit, topped off with a subtle mineral quality and balanced acidity resulting in a lingering aftertaste. This wine was made with a lot of care, with the best quality berries hand selected from the foothills of the Outeniqua mountain near George, before the destemming and crushing processes. Subsequently, only the free run juice was used, and the wine was left on the fine lees for six months before bottling.

The Gold Wine Awards, established in 2014, was born out of a need to help the consumer make educated buying decisions and to help worthy wines sell. With the vast amounts of wine available to the consumer on shelves, there is very little to guide them especially in the lower price categories.

Wines were judged by graduates from the Cape Wine Academy and the results were then statistically linked to the price of the wine to determine which wine was worth the value for money accreditation. The judges were Meryl Vivienne Weaver CWM, Wanda Cronje, Wim Braak, Ralph Reynolds, Nadia Hefer, Erika van Zyl, Dave March CWM, Kent Scheermeyer, Lizette Tolken CWM, Ad and Johan Wegner.

Throughout the years, De Krans Wines has become known for producing quality and award-winning port-style wines, firmly establishing itself as one of South Africa’s leading port producers. De Krans has also won numerous awards in recent years for their Classic and Terroir (Portuguese) ranges of wine. These accolades have reaffirmed the Little Karoo as a diverse wine producing region.
