Castle Lager introduces a beer revelation with tank beer

It was an African first when Castle Lager launched Tank Beer last year, now the beer brand is expanding the experience to new outlets in the Mother City.

Previously only available to South African Breweries brew masters themselves, Castle Lager Tank beer was launched at four outlets – Ferryman’s Tavern, Long Street Café, Quay 4 and Forrester’s Arms but is now also available at The Toad on the Road in Lakeside. The next tank beer instalments (in the pipelines) will be at Bossa Social, Somerset West; Vasco da Gama, Greenpoint; Speak Easy, Durbanville; and Firemans Arms, Cape Town – they will be available to consumers before the end of the year.

But what is tank beer? It is the freshest beer in Africa, delivered from the brewery in a dedicated “Fresh Beer” truck, straight to 500L copper tanks at selected outlets, and – into your glass.

Castle Tank Beer is brewed with no exposure to heat, giving it a unique, unspoilt, refreshingly crisp taste that is alive with flavour.

“Nearly all South African beer is pasteurised to afford it a longer shelf life, but during this process some of beer’s lively characteristics can be diminished,” said Denis da Silva Trade Brewer at SAB.

“However, with good hygiene and short delivery lead times, pasteurisation is not necessary.”
Beer lovers will recognise Castle Lager Tank Beer outlets by the crafted copper tanks in their windows. Follow the pipes from these tanks and you’ll find yourself at the bar ready to order your first Tank Beer.

“While you wait for your tank beer to be poured to perfection, take a look at the date on the tap to find out when the beer you’re about to drink was brewed,” said da Silva.
“Because our Tank Beer is unpasteurised, it has to be consumed within a few days of filling. Castle Lager tank beer is therefore one of the freshest, smoothest and most distinctive tasting beers available in South Africa.”

Castle Lager tank beer was introduced in August 2014 as a contemporary alternative in premium beer. “Tank beer allows consumers to enjoy the experience of draught beer at its best,” said John Chan, Strategy and Innovation Marketing Manager for Castle Lager.

Initially launched under the banner of Castle 1895, tank beer has been brought under the mother brand of Castle Lager, a beer with 120 years of South African heritage and brewing excellence.
