Chardonnay Is Nothing If Not Adaptable But Cooler Areas Seem To Make SA’s Best Versions

The 2021 Chardonnay Report sponsored by multinational financial services company Prescient attracted 93 entries and these were tasted blind (labels out of sight) by a three-person panel, scoring done according to the 100-point quality scale.

“South Africa makes lots of Chardonnay that manages to be of reliable quality and reach the market at a competitive price. Excellence, however, is harder to come by,” says Christian Eedes, chairman of the tasting panel and editor.

“The very best examples tend to come from cool climate growing areas and three of the Top 10 were from famously cool Elgin and one was a Stellenbosch-Elgin blend”.
