Christmas Comes Early with the Release of Flagstone’s Champion Sauvignon Blanc

The 2019 General Smuts Trophy Winner for overall SA Champion Young Wine and SA Champion Sauvignon Blanc is now available, as Flagstone’s Free Run Reserve Sauvignon Blanc, in a limited release of 2100 bottles.

This is Flagstone’s first vegan wine, displaying all the classic cues of a cool climate, high altitude Sauvignon Blanc. Grown in Darling’s dry land soils, 310m above sea level, just a few kilometres from the cold Atlantic Ocean. The unique terroir gives the wine its remarkable distinctive personality, expression and vibrancy.

The grapes for this wine are handpicked in the early hours of the morning, at optimal ripeness, bunch sorted and gently destemmed, then left on the skins for 18 hours at below 5°C. The Free Run juice is then drained and slowly settled by gravity over 48 hours. The juice is fermented at a low temperature to retain all the essential aromatics and kept on lees for 6 months after fermentation to extract maximum aroma and mouthfeel and express the wine’s extraordinary elegance and finesse.

“Each year we’re provided with an opportunity to reflect the wonderful complexity that goes into a vintage, from terroir and soil to climate and weather. Every year the journey is different, every year it’s a challenge and every year there’s an immense reward in combining our skill and creativity to produce Flagstone Sauvignon Blanc,”  says Gerhard Swart, Flagstone’s Head Winemaker.

On the palate, Free Run Reserve Sauvignon Blanc displays layers of fruit complexity with aromas of asparagus, green fig, citrus, passion fruit as well as a hint of guava on the nose. This wine is full-bodied with vibrant acidity and great length – classy, complex and complete!
