Pizza and wine. These two are a match made in heaven in this student town of ours, why it took 300 odd years to pair the two, no one knows.
I visited this inaugural Pizza and Wine event on Sunday, and I was fairly apprehensive once I saw some reviews on Facebook regarding the going-ons from Saturday, but on my arrival I was met with very clear instructing parking attendants and no queues at the ticket/armband area. Everything seemed under control.
Once I received my glass we thought it best to go grab a pizza before attempting the wine. Although the pizza queues seemed a little long, it would be expected at a Pizza festival. We opted for the Flammkuchen…which technically isn’t a pizza (they say so themselves). This treat that originated in Germany traditionally has a crème freche base and its standard toppings also include onions (very thinly sliced). They offered 3 variations of this, one with bacon & spinach with the traditional crème freche and onions or a Vegetarian with a variety of scrumptious looking vegetables including sliced beetroot which was calling my name. Alternatively you could do half/half.
We tried the Welmoed Pinot Noir with Flammkuchen and it was a very good fit, the saltiness of the bacon and crème freche really made the cherries pop in this little wine.
The pond and deck offered a spectacular view from afar with oysters and bubbly on offer, kids had an amazing jungle gym in the front with jumping castles and trampolines in the back area.
The tasting room offered wines per glass and per bottle sales with a variety of beers also available on the day.
All and all a lovely day out, if you manage to secure some tickets for next year, be sure to pack in the sunscreen, it was a scorcher.
