Unique Syrah from the coldest vineyards in Africa

At 1,500 metres above sea level, the Kanolfontein farm in the Sutherland-Karoo is probably the highest and coldest wine-growing area in Africa. The farm is 350 kilometres inland and is blessed with deep shale and clay soils, producing wines that are as unique as the site’s terroir. Tasting two vintages of Single Vineyards Mount Sutherland side by side, one is immediately aware that these wines are like no other South African Syrahs. They have wonderful focus with a subtle grippy tannin structure. This bodes well for future maturation, around 5-8 years from vintage.

The 2012, ever so slightly finer than the 2011, received the Old Mutual Trophy for Best Red Wine with a score of 96. This is high praise from a panel of local and international judges including Cathy van Zyl MW, Véronique Drouhin-Boss, Gerard Basset MW, Christian Eedes, Michael Fridjhon and Wine Cellar’s James Pietersen.

Christian Eedes says of the 91-point 2011: ‘Red and black fruit, pepper plus some subtle smoky, meaty notes. Well defined fruit, lemon-like acidity with fine but still nicely grippy tannins. Classically styled (abv 14% and matured for 15 months in French oak, 20% new). Exciting and unusual – not as rich and ripe as Stellenbosch Shiraz nor as stalky as new-wave Swartland.’
