Let’s give it up for style and subtance! It’s the One Man Band 2009!

We all know that old adage, “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Pffft, in the world of wine, it’s all too easy to be seduced by a sexy label .

Iona’s One Man Band 2009 has a label that few could ignore. It’s lovingly wrapped around the bottle, boasting a luscious glossy black finish and a detailed illustration that’s both modern and African in its aesthetic. Folks, just look at this:

After some research, I discovered that it was designed by South African artist Bruce Arnott:

” The strong linear aesthetics of the illustration and the rigorous form of the sculpture with its African yet contemporary style is well suited to the complex, balanced and layered wine in the bottle.”
(From Miguel Chan)

I mean, wowzers!

Now, with a label that sexy, we have to ask: is this wine like a Victoria’s Secret Model – all good looks but disappointingly vacuous? Or is it like Tony Stark (AKA Iron Man), dashing AND intelligent?

In the case of the One Man Band 2009, I’m happy to say that the latter is true. This fine wine is a merry blend of Merlot (26%), Cabernet Sauvignon (33%), Petit Verdot (3%), Syrah (36%) and Mourvèdre (2%). It’s deliciously smooth and elegant, with moreish flavours of berries, white pepper and a dash of spice. This is a very polished and well crafted wine indeed, Tony Stark would approve!

In short, the One Man Band is a real showstopper. I’d show it off on my shelves because it’s such a pretty bottle, but I’d probably drink it before anyone gets to see it.
