Paula’s Weekender: Cape Town

Header

If things go according to plan I won’t actually be in Cape Town this weekend – work is sending me off on some new adventure (read: euphemism for annual training etcetera). But if I am here, I’ll be doing some stuff.

Like kayaking, maybe hiking, drinking wine and chilling out. It’s been quite a week. Here’s how to unwind and make the most of your 2 days off.

 Lefty's

I’ve had a craving for Lefty’s ribs for a while now – mmmmm – legendary. I’d head to the Fringe for hipster beers and hipster watching while stuffing my face with pork ribs. And then calling it a night. Honestly, this Weekender isn’t in the mood for late nights. There’s too much fun to be had during the day. I can’t be dealing with a hangover.

However – another option this Friday night (for when the feeling of invincibility sets in after a few beers) is Assembly – John Wizards & The Nomadic Orchestra are on stage and tickets are R60 after 10pm, or R40 pre booked.

Assembly

Autumn is upon us – although there’s a bit of heat left – the mornings are fresh and the SE wind is disappearing fast. ‘Tis the perfect time of year to be outdoors as much as possible. I live on the Atlantic Seaboard, and from my balcony I spy on these kayakers (tourists or not, I don’t know) that paddle out in front of the Shell garage in Moullie Point.

I’m plagued with serious envy. Daily. I don’t know why I haven’t done it yet. Especially now – the sea is like a mirror and they’re often near whales and dolphins. I’m watching them right now. Ugh!

There are plenty of companies in town that hire out kayaks and things – here’s one called Kaskazi – they do half day trips and shorter 2 hour paddles.

Not a bad way to spend a Saturday morning.

Kayak

If you’re a red meat eater, then while you’re in Moullie point you should check out the Butcher Shop & Grill. It’s not just a restaurant –it’s a proper little butchery with reasonably priced, great quality steak (and also seriously expensive Kobe-style or Argentinian beef) to buy and take home for your afternoon braai.

Butchers

On Sunday it’s the finale of the Cape Epic at Meerendal. While the rest of us lesser humans have been carrying on as normal, the best mountain bikers in the world and some other just plain hardcore folks have been riding their bicycles like maniacs since the 15th of March.

Meerendal have organized food, wine, live music and all the usual stuff to entertain you if watching the Epic finish isn’t enough.

Cape Epic

Before I leave you to your own devices for a few weeks, there are two things I must mention that aren’t happening this particular weekend but you’ll need to put into the back of your brain somewhere for later:

Firstly there’s a thing happening on the 28th of March. It’s called a Secret Eats   Adventure. I’ve been on one before – and this next one sounds incredible. It includes an overnight stay up the West Coast somewhere and freshly caught seafood cooked by a very talented chef, amongst other things. I can’t tell you more, because it’s all very secretive, but check out the website for bookings. If this one is sold out they’ll put you on a mailing list for next time.

Also, this week I tried to get a booking at the Pot Luck Club for a friend’s birthday at the end of the month. Now if you’re like the rest of Cape Town (or The World) you’ve heard about it and you want to go there.

So I managed to get a booking. For the middle of MAY. Yep.

Just putting it out there. They’re so popular, a table of 8 for a late sitting takes about 2 months to secure. So get in there. If you’re thinking it’s something you’d like to try.

Get out there and send us a tweet or something about what gems you’re finding… @MoreThanFoodCT or comment on a Weekender post and give me some more inspiration. Until next week…
