I have a confession to make. This weekend’s happenings have left me terribly uninspired, and if I had my way I’d tell you all to just go see a movie or have a game night or something. I don’t have everything my own way though so here are my picks for this weekend.
Thursday 12 March 2015
Tonight is the opening of ‘Wetin dey happen Jozi Lagos (That’s Pidgin!)’. The exhibition is an exploration into the disparate yet similar themes of daily life in the cities of Lagos and Johannesburg and the freedom the artist has found in connecting these with jazz. Both cities have a long jazz history – through their respective political regimes and the multilayered experiences of their people is reflected in the works, which started out with acrylics on canvas.
Thokozani (the artist) has then layered some of the images with found media – old cement bags in Lagos, his boarding passes from the several trips between the cities, cuttings from newspapers and bits of litter.

Friday night its the opening of The Artisan in Greenside. The name makes me cringe. The mere mention of Greenside brings back ‘Nam like flashbacks of drunken underage students on a rampage through the streets. But hey it’s something new and shiny and I like shiny things so it may definitely be worth checking out. Who knows it might be the first step in Greenside’s reanimation and zombies are still very much in vogue.

Saturday is Sowing the Seeds, but unless you have been living under a rock, or perhaps not musically inclined (and that’s okay too) you probably already know this. Paolo Nutini and Portugal. The Man are playing.
I know nothing about either of these acts other than I got a free Paolo Nutini track when I opened my iTunes account; way way back in the day when the internet still serenaded me with bleeps and bloops whenever I needed something from it. The South African line up while pretty bog standard these days is guaranteed to be fun.

Sunday is probably the most interesting event this week. It’s called Chips & ETC. It is a series of 6 events artist are invited to reveal musical gems which landmarked and influenced their personal and professional biographies. This first one is at the Troyeville Hotel and showcases Healer Oran who is described as being “one of the most forward thinking and restless producers and performers in Johannesburg.â€
I think that description is pretty blah and overused but he is a great guy that makes really interesting music so it should be well worth going through to check out. The food at the Troyeville is pretty damn good as far as Portuguese inspired pub food goes. I also hear there will be a happy hour from 4pm – 6pm so if nothing else you can end your week well and truly sozzled.
