Let’s fight the flames

Simonsberg

Simonsberg fire damage. A terrible sight to behold. (Photo courtesy of Simonsberg Trails)

In the past couple of weeks many of the Cape’s finest wine growing regions have been plagued by the most appalling wildfires. Elgin and Simonsberg have been badly scorched and the loss of fynbos, forests and vineyards is devastating.

Apart from supporting our heroic firefighters and volunteers (donations of food, soft drinks, eye drops are always needed – check their Facebook page for info), it’s also worth sparing a thought for the wine farms and the economic burden they must bear. The costs of repairing the fire damage are mind-boggling and the effects will surely be felt for years to come. At a time when many farms are preparing to harvest or are in the process of doing so, it’s heartbreaking to see the potential of lovingly tended vineyards going up in smoke.

My favourite way to support the farms is, of course, to buy their wine. Here are some picks from estates that have recently been affected by the fires in one way or another.

Thelema Riesling 2013

wine-thelema-Thelema-Riesling1Name:  Thelema Riesling 2013
Makers:
Thelema
Price: Around R80.00 a bottle

Riesling has been grown in South Africa for ages, but in recent years it only accounts for 0.2% of the total area of wine plantings. There are few white varietals that are so accessible and food friendly, so the renewed interest in Riesling might lead to seeing more of it on the shelves.

With that in mind, the Thelema Riesling is easy to enjoy whether you’re a wine newbie or a seasoned connoisseur.  It’s an unwooded German-style Riesling with off-dry flavours and a dab of sweetness. It’s the perfect, easy going wine to serve with a salad or seafood. It’s lower in alcohol too at 11.5%.

Iona 2009 One Man Band

One Man Band 2009

Name: One Man Band 2009
Winery:
Iona
Price: From R210.00 a bottle

Ok, I have reviewed this wine before, but it’s too good not to mention again. You can’t miss the beautifully illustrated label which was created by South African artist Bruce Arnott. Upon opening a bottle and having a gulp, you’ll be struck by the boldness and intensity of this wine. As a heady blend of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Mourvédre, it’s richly flavoursome and oh so elegant.
