100 women were selected to attend the event after entering the 100 Women 100 Wines competition in October. These women then became judges for the Top 100 Wines in South Africa.

Event organiser, Clare Mack of Spill.co.za, says; “The competition and event is such a unique concept that it is the only event of its kind in the world. It makes sense though, if you consider that eighty percent of wines sold in SA are bought by women and that not many of us are wine connoisseurs, so judging by palate is really the best way to go about it.”

Mark Norrish, GM of sponsors Ultra Liquors, comments: “Drinking wine is all about enjoyment and fun, and there’s a wine for every occasion and moment. What we experienced at this event was a diverse group of women, literally a rainbow cross-section of South African’s, enjoying a selection of wines as different from each other as the women themselves; whites, reds, blends, varietals, MCC’s, rose’s, blushes, sparkling, sweet, dry, value for money and some top end too. Some of the guests knew more about wine than others but all of the women came together as one and the joie de vivre of the afternoon made it really special.” Norrish concludes; “The most important market for wines in South Africa is women, and I am delighted that they are such a confident, sassy and adventurous group of consumers.”

Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Cape Town Tourism adds; “Well done to 100 Women 100 Wines for another successful event, as well as to the winning wines. The innovation of food and wine is an integral part of what makes Cape Town an inspirational city and we encourage events such as 100 Women 100 Wines to showcase our region’s rich wine tourism offering. We look forward to seeing you back in Cape Town next year!”
