Wine by the glass on the rise down under

Wine by the glass is increasingly making an appearance on wine lists, made clear this week at Australia’s Wine List of the Year awards.

The trend is being pushed by both restaurants and customers, according to Matthew Lamb, head sommelier at Vue de Monde.

“We’ve got a much greater sommelier industry than we’ve had in the past. There are a lot of people coming into it that have great passion and knowledge. We’re seeing more international sommeliers working over here in Australia as well, as well as guests being that little bit more receptive and open to new ideas and wanting to try something,” Lamb said.

If it’s not managed correctly, wine by the glass can result in wastage, as guests may order a couple of glasses from different bottles.
