Wine marketer warns of ill effects of draconian health laws

Business Day TV: We have government attempting to push through regulations that will ban alcohol advertising and when it comes to impact, how it could possibly affect big companies has been stealing a lot of attention. To get a slightly different perspective on what it could spell for business, for players in the industry, joining us in studio is Ryan Sowray, who is the CEO of SaleWine.co.za.

Ryan, first up — what have you made of the proposal of an advertising ban on alcohol. Did it come as a surprise to you?

Ryan Sowray: It didn’t come as a surprise — it’s been in the offing for quite a while. The World Health Organisation has put out guidelines to all health ministries throughout the world and we have decided in South Africa to implement it as it came through. One size fits all, which was the opinion of the government. We should have been shouting a bit louder at the start and we weren’t but maybe it’s time to raise our voices now.
