Boplaas is proud to unveil a drinks selection specially curated to celebrate South Africa’s four Rugby World Cup victories. Now you can show your support for the Green and Gold every time you share a bottle from this collection! Only a limited number of these cases are available and can only be purchased from the Boplaas farm in Calitzdorp.
Every case contains six bottles, with four commemorating the country’s rugby triumphs. The two remaining wines comprise a flagship label and the award-winning latest addition to the winery range.
The 1995
Boplaas’s Carel Nel was at the final in 1995 when South Africa won its first Ruby World Cup. The wine selected for the case is the Boplaas Cape Tawny Port 1995. It won Double Gold at Veritas and received five stars from Platter’s South African wine guide. It is a concentrated port with a classic tawny colour, showing toasted nuts and dried figs. It is elegant with a seamless finish.
The 2007
Chosen to represent the 2007 Rugby World Cup is the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2007. This was named SA Champion Port at The Young Wine Show, and also received a five star rating from Platter’s.
The Cape Vintage Reserve is made from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão. As with the tawny, this is a concentrated port with a deep black colour and superb depth of flavour. It is solidly structured with rich ripe tannins and a lingering finish.
The 2019
Carrying the flag for the 2019 Rugby World Cup is the Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2019, which was also a Platter’s five-star wine. It too is made from Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzão. It shows plums and violets along with ripe cherries and dark chocolate. A majestic wine that concludes every sip with a long and satisfying finish.
The 2023
This year was momentous for South Africans, with memories of the game still fresh in everyone’s minds. In fact, Boplaas gifted each player in the Springbok squad a bottle of Boplaas Single Malt Whiskey 6 Year Old. The whisky was specially bottled, signed and numbered with the number the Springbok played. It was distilled from imported Scottish peated malt, matured in a combination of third and fourth-fill ex-bourbon barrels for 5 years and then finished in Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve barrels for another two years. It was bottled at 54%. Only 300 bottles were produced.
To complete the six-bottle case, is a bottle of Boplaas Alvarinho 2023. It was rated as the best new cultivar and awarded Gold at the Niche Wines Challenge this year. The wine shows green citrus, nectarine, Pamplemousse and a chalky, saline finish.
With the Alvarinho, collectors buying the World Cup Rugby case also receive a bottle of Gamka Red 2020. The bright garnet red wine shows hedgerow fruits, tart cranberry, ripe plum notes and fynbos. It was awarded Double Platinum at the SA Top 100; 4 ½ stars by Platter’s; Gold at the Michaelangelo International Wine and Spirit Awards; and 90 points from Tim Atkin MW.
A minimal number of these Rugby World Cup winners will be available from the farm at Boplaas for R3 700 per case.
The entire Boplaas range of wines and spirits is available for purchase from our online shop and at selected retailers across the country. There are Boplaas tasting rooms at Calitzdorp and along the Garden Route at Redberry Farm in George and Old Nick Village in Plettenberg Bay. Another is to be opened at Hart & Bosch Village in Hartenbos soon.
