Hartenberg Flies High at the 2015 SAA Wine Awards

Continuing its sterling success with numerous local and international awards already won this year, Hartenberg Wine Estate has been awarded the SAA Red Wine Trophy for the Hartenberg Shiraz 2010, at the 2015 SAA Wine Awards.

This is the fourth time the estate has been awarded this accolade, and the first for a South African wine producer to receive this recognition four times – an outstanding achievement indeed.

Previous winners include the Hartenberg Shiraz 2000 (2003), Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2001 (2004) and the Hartenberg The Mackenzie 2005 (2010).

Already an award winning wine the Shiraz 2010 received a Gold Medal at the 2014 International Wine & Spirits Competition as well as earning a spot as one of the Top 12 Shiraz wines in South Africa for 2014, at the SA Shiraz Challenge. Cellarmaster Carl Schultz, who has been recognised as one of the leading wine makers in South Africa, describes this wine as having a saturated, deep black-red colour with elegant aromas of spice, violets and berries. The palate is rich and silky with soft ripe tannins that give structure.

Reaffirming its position as one of South Africa’s leading producers Hartenberg Wine Estate, situated in the heart of the Stellenbosch Winelands, has had an excellent year both on the local and international competition front. Earlier this year the estate was awarded the International Trophy for Best Bordeaux Varietal at the 2014 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA), for the Hartenberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2010. The DWWA is the world’s largest wine industry competition with representation from wine countries across the globe. In Europe the Hartenberg Merlot 2010 was awarded a Gold medal at the 21st Concours Mondial de Bruxelles.

Closer to home The Mackenzie 2011 received a 5-star rating in the latest edition of the authoritative and internationally recognized Platter’s by Diners Club South African WineGuide 2015. This is the third time the wine has been awarded this prestigious rating, with the first 5-star ratings received in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Completing the line up of awards the Eleanor Chardonnay 2012 not only received a Gold medal at the 2014 International Wine & Spirits Competition in London, but was also listed as one the Top 10 Chardonnays in this year’s Christian Eedes Chardonnay Report. The same wine was only one of two wines to score five stars.
