Lanzerac Chardonnay 2013 – a wine of origin

The latest release to emerge from the Lanzerac cellar this summer is the superb Lanzerac Chardonnay 2013, which marks a slight shift from Lanzerac to put more emphasize on terroir in their wines. For the first time Lanzerac has labelled their wine as originated from the Jonkershoek Valley in Stellenbosch as opposed to the more broadly W.O. Stellenbosch certification.

All the grapes for Lanzerac wines are grown and sourced from this Jonkershoek Valley estate. The grapes were sourced from vineyards varying in age from 11 to 20 years, and consist of different clones to add complexity to the wine. The blocks are mainly from deep sandy soils and cover an area of 5.44 hectares. We have always believed in the quality and uniqueness of the Jonkershoek Valley as a wine ward in the greater Stellenbosch area and we believe our wines are an expression of this beautiful and historical valley. Future bottlings will also be certified as Jonkershoek Valley Wine of Origin,’ says cellar master Wynand Lategan.

A wooded Chardonnay which Wynand describes as displaying prominent citrus aromas on the nose, followed by a complexity of flavours such as lemon, clover, ginger and vanilla. The palate shows excellent balance between fruit, acidity and softness with a full body and lingering aftertaste. Ready to drink now or cellar for a further three to five years in order for the wine to reach its full ageing potential. Perfect for the summer and the ideal food wine to enjoy with mild Seafood curries with buttery sauces, Fish Cakes, a Chicken Caesar salad or even Peach and Mango based salads.
