Dinging your Dong

Could Thursday’s consumer blind tasting of Two Oceans wines be the first ripples of a tsunami that flushes out the U-bend of the SA wine spittoon, clogged up by an entrenched tasting mafia with more conflicts of interest than a Fifa official, as one wine marketer e-mailed yesterday? Perhaps those frustrated entrepreneurs who baulked at paying Fifa R50 000 for a hawkers’ license to peddle R30 plastic rain ponchos to punters outside the rainy Green Point Stadium earlier this week could rethink their business model and facilitate a network of consumer tasting panels. Imagine the Breedekloof wine route offering blind tastings of their beauties against the competition from the fashionable side of the mountain and reporting the results on social networking sites. Consumers have nothing to lose but their prejudices.
