A visit from Robert Rosenbach bearing wines and grappas from his Tanagra farm in McGregor. When asked where the Aussie-sounding farm name came from, Robert said it was Khoi for oasis – a shady place near water. Hang on, that sounds like Franschhoek or does the shade apply to the morals of some of the inhabitants? My own explanation is its an acronym for granaat – pomegranate, which is what the Heavenly Chaos 2013 red blend of Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet tastes of. A total steal from the farm at R55.

But the real eye-opener was the range of grappas and schnapps made from every fruit it seems, except for pomegranates. My pick was the silky Chardonnay grappa and one double distilled from the lees of Abrie Bruwer’s Springfield Life from Stone.

What would the panel of the FNB Top Ten Sauvignon Blanc circus make of this, I wonder? But at the end of the day, who cares? The spirit world is heavenly chaos indeed.
