The Mackenzie strikes Gold at Decanter World Wine Awards

Named after the Mackenzie family in a 400-year lineage of owners, The Mackenzie 2012 has earned a place amongst some of the world’s finest, by winning a Gold medal at the 2015 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA).

The awards were announced on 14 June.

The DWWA, established in 2004 by Decanter Magazine, is regarded as the world’s largest and most influential wine competition, which is chaired by a panel of international and highly influential judges. Decanter consultant editor, Steven Spurrier headed this year’s panel, and was assisted by the vice-Chair Gerard Basset OBE MS MW. Together they were joined by a panel of 240 judges, which included 85 Masters of Wine and 23 Master Sommeliers. Sixteen thousand wines from twenty-two countries were judged.

The Mackenzie 2012, made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec grapes, signifies the regeneration of Hartenberg and its offering – from vineyards and wines to sublime food and community.

With the Cabernet Sauvignon as the backbone in this Bordeaux blend it reinforces its position as the ‘King of the Red Wines’, adding savoury notes and beautiful depth. Merlot (also known as the lady of the red varieties) brings elegance and finesse to the wines. Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot complete the picture, creating the perfect harmony to this award-winning wine.

Limited to only 20 barrels The Mackenzie is guaranteed to take centre stage in any wine collector’s cellar. Having spent 19 months in 100% new French oak this wine will reach its full ageing potential within the next eight to 12 years.

“I love The Mackenzie’s textures and layers, which allow it to pair really well with richer style foods,” says cellarmaster Carl Schultz. “It loves umami (meaty, savoury) flavours such as mushrooms and Parmesan or other nutty style cheeses. Or even try it with a homemade beef burger (topped with a slice of gruyere or cheddar cheese). Works beautifully with braised beef short ribs or your choice of game meat.”

The Mackenzie 2012 is available directly off the farm at R385 per bottle or from select specialist wine stores. For more information visit www.hartenbergestate.com.
