Benguela Cove Launches Two New Sweet Wines

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is excited to announce the release of its sweet wines, the Benguela Cove Noble Late Harvest 2015 and Matilda’s Secret Natural Sweet 2014. In celebration of the launch of these decadent wines, Benguela Cove invites you to their launch on Saturday, 28 May.

Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine Estate is a 200 hectare lifestyle farm and exclusive luxury estate situated in Walker Bay, Hermanus. Overlooking the Bot River Lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean; the favourable maritime conditions ensures that this unique terroir produces outstanding quality grapes.

Entry to the event is FREE and guests are invited to celebrate the release of these two new wines on Saturday, 28 May. The day will be packed with fun activities for young and old including live classical musical, canapes, cheese and charcuterie boards as well as face painting for the children.

Benguela Cove’s close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean results in a cooler median daytime temperature and in cool maritime winds that caress the vineyards at night. This favourable climate, use of covered crops and the direction in which the vines face aid in the slow ripening of their grapes.

About the Matilda’s Secret Natural Sweet 2014

The Viognier grapes’ exposure to the cool ocean mist helped to slow the ripening process and produce grapes of concentrated intensity. The grapes were left on the vine until a lot of the natural moisture had evaporated from the grapes resulting in a raisin-like texture with concentrated flavours. The Viognier grapes were meticulously hand harvested and gently pressed using a small basket press for optimal extraction. Fermentation occurred on the skins and thereafter the wine was then racked into 225-litre old French oak barrels where it spent 4 months ageing on the fine lees.

The Matilda’s Secret Natural Sweet 2014 is a delicate and sweet wine with notes of raisin, apricot, vanilla and honey on the palate and delicate floral perfumes on the nose. The subtle mouthfeel and lingering aftertaste contains the perfect balance of fruit and citrus acidity. Enjoy this versatile sweet wine on its own or with light summer salads or desserts with caramel, butterscotch, fruit, vanilla or coconut. Available at R100 per bottle.

About the Benguela Cove Noble Late Harvest 2015

The Sauvignon Blanc grapes’ exposure to the cool ocean mist helps to create conditions under which botrytis cinerea (noble rot) can flourish, producing grapes of concentrated intensity. The botrytis cinerea grapes were meticulously selected and harvested by hand. On arrival at the cellar, further hand selection and sorting of botrytis infected bunches was done. After settling, fermentation occurred in both stainless steel tanks and 225-litre French oak barrels (20%) at 16°C.
